The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) will give an election recap on state legislative results and impact, including key takeaways, who is in control now and the overall national landscape. The session will also highlight SJC legislative successes over the past year and forecast issues expected to be on top of state agendas in 2025.

Presenters:

  • Sarah Brown, Criminal and Civil Justice Program, NCSL
  • Amber Widgery, Criminal and Civil Justice Program, NCSL
  • Amanda Essex, Criminal and Civil Justice Program, NCSL

Resources:

NCSL published a snapshot on Legislative Approaches to Prison Oversight. A great resource on the topic of corrections oversight is the National Resource Center for Correctional Oversight (NRCCO) from the Prison and Jail Innovation Lab (PJIL) at the University of Texas at Austin. The NRCCO has more information coming soon on jail oversight bodies in particular. In a 2010 law review article, the director of the PJIL identified eight categories of correctional oversight bodies, including some that are non-governmental such as advocacy groups with formal right of access, citizens’ boards or advisory committees, and protection and advocacy organizations with focus on prison issues.
