Hopefully you're getting excited for the SJC Research Symposium, which is just a few weeks away!  The symposium will feature more than 50 presenters, including researchers, practitioners, journalists, reform advocates, and people with lived experience.  In the run up to the event, we want to highlight a few of the talented faculty members who will be sharing their work.

Carrie Pettus and Rebeccah Bennett will be participating in the plenary session Advancing Racial Equity: What has been Learned and What it Means for Policy and Practice on Friday, October 18th.

Dr. Carrie Pettus is a leading social work scholar dedicated to advancing social equity and wellbeing among those involved in criminal legal and justice systems. As the Founder and CEO of Wellbeing & Equity Innovations, she collaborates with government and community partners to improve outcomes through research-practitioner partnerships. Her research expertise includes trauma, behavioral health, violence, and family systems in criminal legal and justice settings, such as diversion and deflection, incarceration, and reentry.

Rebeccah Bennett is a serial community builder, healer and social entrepreneur.  In the last twenty five years, she has founded:  Emerging Wisdom – a St. Louis-based community and organizational development consulting firm; InPower Institute – an operating foundation committed to community healing and well-being; the Black Healers Collective – a community of practice that advances the healing and wholeness of African diaspora peoples; and Spirit Rising – a spiritual community that supports its members' spiritual growth and liberation. At Emerging Wisdom, Rebeccah and her team undertake community development and planning projects, organizational improvement efforts, and multi-stakeholder transformation initiatives.  Within these areas, they provide consulting, training, facilitation and planning services.

Carrie and Rebeccah were two of the authors on the SJC Methods Brief Achieving Racial Equity & Improving Culture in Jails Using a Community-Engaged Quality Improvement Process.  You can read the full report here, or check out Carrie's blog on safetyandjusticechallenge.org.

Have you been working to build a more equitable culture in your local jail?  We hope you'll join the conversation with Carrie and Rebeccah at the symposium!
