Protecting public safety is an essential function of government. Yet, despite the crucial importance of this responsibility, public safety policies and investments are rarely informed by the experiences of people who have been hurt by crime and violence. To inform the urgent debate on crime policy, Alliance for Safety and Justice commissioned their second National Survey of Victims’ Views and The National Center for Victims of Crime recently released a report on survivor storytelling - Empowering, Not Exploiting. This workshop describes key findings from this important research and points to opportunities for further research, reform and storytelling to advance policies and solutions that align with the needs and perspectives of victims.
