[HYBRID] Bail Reform in New York: Five Years In & What Comes Next

Part of Criminal Legal Reform in New York: Five Years In, an in-person and online event series based on CUNY Insitute for State & Local Governance's recent study looking at the implementation of bail + other criminal legal reforms in New York. 

The series is presented in partnership with the Data Collaborative for Justice. It will bring together researchers (including from SJC partner Vera Institute of Justice) as well as prosecutors, judges, defense attorneys, pretrial service staff, advocates, and more to discuss the impact and future of reforms to bail, pretrial services, discovery, and desk appearance tickets (DATs). Implemented in January 2020 and hailed as one of the most ambitious reforms in the country, New York's hotly contested reforms eliminated bail and pretrial detention for most misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies, expanded pretrial services, and required courts to consider people's ability to afford bail before setting it.
