Most people who miss court aren't trying to evade justice. They're navigating real-life challenges: unreliable transportation, lack of child care, unclear instructions, or simply fear of the unknown. Yet in too many places, the default response is a bench warrant, ratcheting up consequences, clogging court dockets, and making it harder for people to get back on track.
We know what works: simple text reminders, clearer notices, options for remote appearances, opportunities to get back on track. Of course, some situations do call for swift sanctions or preventative detention, but those should be the exception, not the rule. These aren't radical ideas. They're common-sense strategies that improve appearance rates, reduce costs, and build trust in the system.
