Caging Compassion: Recognizing and resisting carceral humanist narratives in criminal justice reform

Hi everyone,

I wanted to bring your attention to a resource the Prison Policy Initiative published recently. Our new "Carceral Humanism" toolkit is a roadmap for advocates seeking to put their efforts behind reforms that are focused on impact, not image. The toolkit explains how some reforms are presented as helping incarceration be more humane when in fact they expand the reach of the carceral system, and offers suggestions for activists to assess whether certain reform ideas are decarceral - or just "carceral humanist."

On February 25 at 1pm ET, we'll host a webinar with guests James Kilgore and Mon Mohapatra to talk more about this problem: how both decarceration and humanization of carceral settings can end up taking a backseat to "reforms" aimed at changing the public perception of prisons, not prisons themselves. To learn more about the webinar, visit our blog.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Wanda
