As the nation has rolled out numerous federal and local initiatives related to 988, housing, and other aspects of life, there has been an increased concern whether or not BIPOC people with disabilities and lived experiences are centered and included as we rethink what mental health support and community safety looks like. Through this workshop, participants will develop a greater understanding of disability, intersectionality, and proven ways to address obstacles as we collectively re-think safety and inclusion in ways that reduce, and eventually end police response, incarceration, and institutionalization of our BIPOC Disability community members during a mental and behavioral health crisis. Through the workshop, we offer insights and guidance for true community-based responses. We also will provide strategies to help people advocate for themselves as well as their communities to adopt new and more effective supports and services.
