Hi all,
I wanted to pass along the Prison Policy Initiative's analysis of the most recent ICE arrest data, which we published late last week. This piece provides an update to our July report Hiding in Plain Sight, using data running through mid-October. As in that report, we stress in this update that sheriffs and police are providing essential support to ICE and facilitating immigration arrests in jails.
We highlight the success of states like Illinois that have passed laws thoroughly prohibiting jails from working with ICE. These states have seen far fewer immigration arrests in total than states that allow or encourage local collaborations with ICE. They have also seen fewer arrests than states like New Jersey, which do not allow law enforcement to enter 287(g) agreements but permit other forms of cooperation, such as honoring detainers and sharing information with ICE.
Please get in touch if you have any questions. I hope this is useful in your work.
Take care,
Wanda Bertram
