Hi all,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to circulate a new report released this week from The Bail Project, "Out of Pocket: The High Cost of Pretrial Incarceration."
The report focuses on the many detrimental costs – financial and otherwise – of incarcerating people pretrial, estimating the incredible toll of the U.S.'s over-reliance on cash bail. Specifically, it focuses on several key areas:
  • Wasted taxpayer dollars;
  • Impacts on people with mental illness;
  • Heightening disparities for people of color;
  • The decimation of voting rights; and
  • The importance of providing services that address unmet needs.
It ultimately makes the case for investing in "needs-based solutions" to improve the outcomes for the tens of thousands of people incarcerated each day – and save taxpayer dollars that could be better spent addressing the root causes of justice-system involvement.

You can read the full report here. This is the first report we're releasing as a part of the roll-out of our new publications library. We welcome any thoughts and feedback on it. If you're inclined to share it with your networks, please feel free to do so. We appreciate your engagement with it, and hope that you will find it a useful resource.

Kind regards,
Jeremy Cherson
