With Dr. Emily Lupez, we published a briefing on medical copay "waivers" in prisons and found that these waivers are not effective at making sure incarcerated people get necessary care. Building on Dr. Lupez's prior research finding that copays are associated with reduced healthcare access in prisons, we use this analysis of copay waivers to argue that medical copays should be abolished in the 39 states (and the federal system) that still have them.
