Hi all,
I wanted to let you know about a new resource we published yesterday in collaboration with Prison Banned Books Week. Using data that the folks at PBBW collected, we've updated our analysis of how many state prison systems have tablet computers, and added some commentary about how tablets may be on the whole reducing incarcerated people's access to books.
We discuss how:
At least 48 states have indicated that they have, or are in the process of implementing, prison tablets.
In the meantime, access to physical books is becoming increasingly rare behind bars as departments of corrections restrict book donations, ban many in-demand titles, and reduce library access.
Contrary to what many corrections officials have promised, the e-book selections on tablets are not filling the existing gaps.
You can read our full analysis here: https://www.prisonpolicy.org/blog/2024/09/16/prison_banned_book_week/
I hope this is useful in your work!
Take care,
Wanda
