State of Phone Justice 2022: The problem, the progress, and what's next (PPI, 2022)

01-03-2023 11:17 AM

The Prison Policy Initiative released a new 50 state report, State of Phone Justice 2022: the problem, the progress & what's next, that updates PPI's groundbreaking 2019 report. In this new report, they explain how telecom companies and facilities continue to work together to exploit incarcerated people and their families. PPI compiles updated phone-rate data on nearly every correctional facility in the country - prisons in all 50 states and more than 3,000 jails/other facilities.

Undeniable progress has been made to lower the cost of communication in prisons, but the work is not over. PPI explains how the prison and jail phone industry still uses abusive fees to maintain its profit margins and has expanded into other industries - such as video calling, tablets, and electronic messaging - to continue to squeeze money out of incarcerated people and their families.

Finally, PPI highlights 10+ steps that federal and state officials can take to bring down costs further and address some of this industry's worst abuses.
