As part of its work tracking progress across the SJC, ISLG built two tools: an internal dashboard making jail population measures accessible within the network, and Measuring Progress, a tool to help the public understand and engage with data across the initiative. They SJC’s goal is not only to reduce jail populations and related inequities, but to do so safely. There has been national attention on the recent uptick in violent crimes, particularly homicides, and whether jail population reductions are related. To unpack this, it is important to examine the relationship between decarceration and local crime trends as well as returns to custody within the pretrial release population. This workshop will provide an overview of both jail trends tools, preliminary results from our public safety analysis, and will focus on their use in telling data stories that engage and inform audiences both inside and outside the SJC.
