In 2023 Congress passed a law that will require jails and prisons to provide certain health care-related services to youths upon reentry under Medicaid. This law will directly affect adult jails because, depending on certain factors, the definition of "youth" can include some individuals through age 25. The law also gives states the option of using Medicaid to cover some youth who are pre-trial. The law goes into effect January 1, 2025, so jails should begin preparing now.
